History of Iranganiyavalai Sivagurunathaswamy Temple
Kankesanthurai An interesting and significant historical myth goes four centuries back pertaining to the origin of this temple. Some of the inhabitants lived in the proximity and surroundings of this temple were merchants who traded-in by exchanging their goods with those of other traders living far away from their homes. Once it so happened, the merchants travelled by bullock-corts, the only mode of transport, to a village called Pannagama (presently called Matale) which was 18 miles from Kandy. The journey took around six months to reach the destinations from their own village. After exchanging their commodities with the others, the merchants set out for the return journey. They took the risk of their valuable lives in order to make their means.
As said above, the merchants commenced their long journey back. Amazingly, another bull which was nondescript, not known its whereabouts and unclaimed by anyone, had joined this trader’s journey. To everyone’s surprise, all of a sudden, an anonymous voice above in the sky was heard saying to the merchants who were just movina out of a few yards for their return journey abruptly stopped at once. The voice told them to cover the body of the new bull with a piece of white cloth, and the voice reiterated that the result of this action would miraculously shorten their journey by eight days time instead of sixty days. Promptly merchants did so, then, and they were astonished to watch the new bull voluntarily led the team and took all of the them safely to the deemed destination, waking and strengthening the faith of god more and more in the heart of them.
As they reached near their village the bull walked under a bo tree and lied down there. In the night, the leader of the merchants happened to see a dream wherein the god Gurunathar Swamy appeared and revealed him that it was the lord Gurunathar Swamy who came disguised as bull and would be pleased to have. a temple to be erected in the in the name of Lord Gurunathar Swamy, where the sacred bull lied down. The bull disappeared next day.
It is to be taken to count once more that this miracle had happened more than four hundred years-ago. Generation after generation this believe has been-imbued in the hearts of tens of thousands of devotees of this area and the bordering villages.
They always strongly exercise to possess ever growing devotions and seek salvations whenever they are in perils, difficulties, suffering from incurable ailments and even fatal diseases and witnessed to experience his kindness and shower of blessings. In short, they strongly believed Lord Gurunathar Swamy has been the one and the only one who is the protector of all of them. They had regular worshipping hours, conducted rituals and ‘poojas’ besides conducting spiritual and religious discourses, provided free meals called ‘Anna Thanam’ to the poors and hindu cultural activities.

விக்கிரகம் வந்திறங்கிய காரணத்தால் காங்கேசன்துறை எனப்பெயர் கொண்ட இப்
புண்ணிய பூமியில் ஒருபால் அமைந்துள்ள இறங்கண்யவளை எனும் பதியில் இச்.
சிவகுருநாத ஆலயம் அமைந்துள்ளது.
ஏறக்குறைய 400 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் இக்கிராமத்தில் வாழ்ந்த மக்கள்
வியாபாரம் காரணமாக இவ்வூர்ப் பண்டங்களை பொதிமாடுகளில் ஏற்றி
கண்டியிலிருந்து 17 மைல் தூரத்திலுள்ள பன்னகாமம், தற்போது மாத்தளையென
அழைக்கப்படும் ஊருக்குப் போய் பண்டமாற்று செய்து திரும்புவது வழக்கம்.
இப்படியான பிரயாணம் போய்வர ஏறக்குறைய 6 மாதங்கள் ஆகம். ஒருமுறை இவ்
வியாபாரிகள் திரும்பி வரும்பொழுது “முன்னுக்குப் போகும் மாட்டை ஒரு
வெள்ளைச் சீலையால் போருங்கள். நீங்கள் 8 நாட்களில் உங்கள் ஊர் போய்ச்
சேர்வீர்கள். நான் தான் குருநாதன்” என ஒரு அசரீரி வாக்கு கேட்டது. அப்படியே
வணிகர் குழாம் செய்ய வெள்ளைச் சீலையால் போர்த்ப்பட்ட மாடு முன்செல்ல, மற்றப்
பொதி மாடுகளும் வணிகர் குழாமும் பின் தொடர வெள்ளைச் சீலையால்
போர்த்தப்பட்ட மாடு எட்டு நாட்களில் இவ்வாலயம் தற்பொழுது நிறுவப்பட்டிருக்கும்
இடத்தில் உள்ள அரச மரத்தின் கீழ் படுத்துக் கொண்டது. இவ்வூர்த் தலைவருக்குக்
கனவில் தோன்றி இட்ட கட்டளைப்படி இவ்வூர் மக்கள் சிவகுருநாத ஆலயம் ஒன்றை
அமைத்து வழிபட்டு வருவராயினர். இது கர்ண பரம்பரையாக வரும் கதை. இவ்
வாலயத்துக்கருகில் சப்த கன்னியர் குண்டு எனவும் நாச்சிமார் குண்டு எனவும்,
அழைக்கப்படும். ஏழு நன்னீர் ஊற்றுக்கள் உள்ள திருக்கேணியொன்றும் உண்டு.
இப்பெருமான் இங்கு எழுந்தருளியபின், இவ்வாலயத்தை சூழ்ந்த கிராமங்களில்.
வாழும் மக்களுக்கு விஷ நோய், பெண்களுக்கு பிரசவ
காலங்களில் உண்டாகும் நோய்கள் ஏற்படுவதில்லை. விசேடமாக அரவங்களால்
தீண்டப்பெற்று இறந்தவர்களுமில்லை.
